Sophia and Gerard’s love story began on an app, on an iPhone; indicative of the current digital era. The two met on Tinder in November of 2013. She was looking to meet new people and get out of the house. He was looking to have fun and find where all the single women had been hiding thus far. During one of their first text conversations, Gerard asked Sophia what was her favorite restaurant. She replied that she’s been to many wonderful places, but didn’t necessarily have a favorite. He decided that this was solely because she had never been to Harlem Shake and proceeded to ask her out on their very first date. Sophia was initially skeptical to meet him at Harlem Shake because she lived in Brooklyn and worked in Lower Manhattan at the time. Going Uptown seemed so far out of the way and she wasn’t even sure this guy was worth it. She ultimately decided to go (since she was going ALLLLL the way up to Harlem, she did not wear heels, but flat boots instead as a passive aggressive sign of protest). Sophia arrived 5 mins late and was pleasantly surprised to find Gerard already there waiting and she knew right then and there that the date would be good. She was wrong. The date was not good, it was GREAT. Within 15 minutes Gerard and Sophia were debating about something Beyoncé/Jay Z related and he could actually go toe-to-toe with her. Was it because he was an attorney? Probably. Either way, she loved to argue and was happy to discover that Gerard was not put off by her strong opinions. After Harlem Shake, the two went to Corner Social for drinks and more talking. Before date #1 was over, Gerard was dropping hints about date #2 because they discovered through the course of their conversation that they worked relatively close to each other and could grab a weekday lunch easily. Sophia started the evening complaining about going to Harlem, but in the end was so glad she made the trip (Gerard ended up in Brooklyn for date #3 and also for the foreseeable future so she rightly won that battle).
